James Bond Island Information

James Bond Island or Koh Tapu, known originally and locally as Ko Tapu or Nail Island, found fame through the 1974 Bond film “The Man with the Golden Gun”. The film starred Roger Moore and Christopher Lee (as the three nippled arch-villain Scaramanga) but it was the scenic topography that helped make the film into a firm Bond favourite. It also turned the previously unknown Phang Nga Bay into a major tourist attraction.

Everyday tour buses packed with thousands of tourists leave Phuket for the daylong sightseeing trip driving two hours to Phang Nga Bay, often stopping at the popular Monkey Caves (Wat Suwankuha) to see the large reclining golden Buddha inside the caves and the large flocks of monkeys outside.After this the bus takes them to Phang Nga Bay where they travel by long tail boat for lunch at Koh Pannyi, a floating Muslim fishing village that is referred to by some locals as “Bin Laden Village”. After exploring the floating fishing village everybody gets back onto the long tail boat and heads for the prime attraction, James Bond Island.

A 15-minute boat ride later and the island comes into view.

The James Bond Island that you disembark onto is crowded with stalls selling seashells and trinkets but unfortunately nobody has taken the initiative to create or sell anything of interest to Bond fans. No replica golden guns, no postcards of the film, not even a DVD of the film. The people on the stalls are pushy but easy to avoid, just don’t go near them.

Beer is pretty expensive on the island at double the market price but it is not available at the Muslim fishing village so this is the place to get it if you fancy a can. Confusing signs are placed around the island that try to explain how the rock was formed but these are written in “Tinglish” so make very little sense. The tour guides normally give you 30 minutes on the island; just long enough take some pictures, have a drink and go to the toilet.

First Day : Koh Tarutao National Park – Koh Khai – Koh Li Pe

10.30 Join up at Pakbara Pier
11.00 Board the boat…
Depart for Pakbara Pier, then heading to visit the Asian’s Heritage at Tarutao National Park.

11.30 Arrive Koh Tarutao. It was honored“ ASEAN Herigate Park and Reserver”. Koh Tarutao’s national park office is located at Phante Malacca Bay. The history of Tarutao is tied to the history of democracy in Thailand. The need for an isolated and forbidding environment to lock away enemies of the state caused the Corrections Department to build a penal colony there in 1939. There is a small Tourist exhibition showing the features of the islands and history of prison. The limestone cliff that bounds the plain area to the East offers a beautiful view to the bay and the mouth of Khlong Phante Malacca.
12.00 Leaving for Koh Khai, a small island about halfway between Tarutao and Adang-Rawi Islands, this is a idyllic island with the famous stone arch, blinding white sand and clear aqua sea. The word “Khai” means egg in Thai, indicating a large sea turtle nesting site in the past. There is some damaged coral around Ko Khai, and colorful fish, but spiky sea urchins seem to dominate.
13.00 Then, Heading to Koh Lipe for check in at the resort to have a Thai lunch. Then feel free to have a rest at Koh Lipe, The land of the sea gypsies – Nearby islands familiar with vacationers are Lipe or Nipis Island (meaning “thin” island in Malay). Koh Lipe is an island in Adang archipelago, one kilometer south, and 25 kilometers west of Tarutao island
The prominence of Lipe lies on the natural beauty of colorful corals around the island. Particularly fascinating are the ones in the front of the island where visitors can see mazes of colorful corals and exotic tropical fishes under the clear water, a site comparable to a giant aquarium.

16.00 Get ready at the beach in front of the resort, and then we’ll lead you to see the sunset. While walking you’ll see and feel the way of life of local residences. After we come back to the beach and you can practice your snorkeling using our equipment…
